WRITING

Writing is highly related to reading, that's why not many pages have been devoted to writing in this blog.

There are some basic ideas to bear in mind:

  • Use most of the vocabulary and grammmar you have learnt when you are writing. Try to include idiomatic expressions too.
  • Use at least three paragraphs: introduction, development and conclusion
  • The SUBJECT is obligatory. Every sentence includes a subject, which appears at the very beginning.
  • Subject +verb concord.
  • Adjectives are invariable words and appear before nouns.
  • Start using short sentences at first, then, add linking words to link two sentences.
  • Double check for spelling and grammar mistakes to make it perfect.

Basic topics for writing can be:

  • Describing people
    • Choose a part to start, for example the head and then continue in an organised way. Use introductory sences such as:
      • Do you know....?
      • I am going to describe.... because...
      • Have you ever heard about...?
  • Routines, hobbies.
    • In order to describe routines, we will use the present simple and frequency adverbs.
    • To put events in order, it is necessary to use linkers:
      • First, then, after that, finally...
    • The present continuous is used to describe what is happening at the moment of speaking.
  • Story telling. Telling a story in the past. Using at the same time the past continous in order to describe the context of the action as well as long actions in the process. Use linkers:
    • First, then, after that, finally, in the end
    • Express contrast: however
    • Raise interest with adverbs: surprisingly, suddenly.
  • Telling our future plans: holidays, places to visit, future jobs...
    • Use TO BE GOING TO for plans.
    • Use WILL for predictions.
    • You can add modal verbs (might, may, can) and conditional sentences to make them more interesting.
